"The Conscience of the King..."

It has been a year since posting our last blog. Time flies and many things have happened in a years' time. One of the few certainties in life is, "change is swift and constant". Some readers have new jobs, new homes and some have blessed events. Some have lost loved ones and some have just watched and waited for change.

As Publisher of First Ledger, I ask that on Super Tuesday, please remember, it's not about fundraising or who "owes" who, when you go into the voting booth on February 5th. I won't tell you who you should vote for (I have been pretty vocal about whom I endorse), just remember that campaign promises are always fleeting. The only thing I would ask readers to do, is to look into your hearts and then take a long hard look at your kids before you walk out the door to vote. If you don't have kids yet (like me), turn and look at the person closest to you in life and think to yourself, "What's in it for them?".

With the long overdue opportunity for millions around the world to see two African American coaches compete for the first time in the Super Bowl, this event may rank among other historic milestones like Hank Aaron's 729th home run as effecting "real" change in mainstream American culture. This was arguably a more exciting game than Super Bowl's and offers all Black people the change to express something lacking in professional sports lately. Pride.

Mooninites Attack Boston!

For those of you who have no idea what those "Space Invader" looking gizmos were that set off a full scale terrorist alert in Boston last week, we will explain. The "Mooninites" (Ignigknot and Err) are characters from Turner Broadcasting Networks's Cartoon Network (Adult Swim) series "Aqua Teen Hunger Force". With main-characters like "Master Shake" and "Meatwad", the show is really weird but really, really funny. However, a marketing gimick using circuit boards, raising the terror alert in Boston was not funny at all to local officials.

"LOS ANGELES -- Singer Barbara McNair, who became a film and television star in an era when such opportunities were opening up for black women, has died, her sister said. She was 72.
McNair died Sunday after a battle with throat cancer in Los Angeles, sister Jacqueline Gaither said.
"She was very family oriented," Gaither said. "She was more than just a star or a famous personality. She was a person of her own."
McNair made her Hollywood acting debut in 1968 in the film, "If He Hollers, Let Him Go."
She later starred opposite Sydney Poitier in "They Call Me Mister Tibbs" and with Elvis Presley in "Change of Habit."
She hosted television's "The Barbara McNair Show," a musical and comedy program in the late 1960s and early 1970s. As a singer, one of her biggest hits was "You Could Never Love Him.""

It is had for someone raised on "Baltimore" Colts football to admit it, but Tony Dungy and his staff and team deserve our respect and admiration for overcoming unbelieveable odds in his career (he got fired from the Tampa Bay Bucaneers and lost his son to suicide), to become the first African American coach to play in (and win) a Super Bowl. Now maybe we can get a Black President under our belt next and then take on Hockey!

DJ Sky Nellor ripped up the dance floor at "Suite" with her mix of old school hits and new beats. Although some younger partiers were confused by a few of the "old-skool" tracks, they managed to keep it moving with the older folks.

Is there any doubt that Prince's performance was the best Super Bowl half time show in recent memory? "His Royal Badness" managed to unleash a torrent of his greatest hits and a tribute to Jimi in the pouring rain to a frenzied Super Bowl audience. Although the media is reporting some viewers were offended, at least he kept his clothes on. Besides, nothing we saw was as nasty as that "Snickers" commercial (Bleeech!).

The New York Giants’ Tiki Barber celebrated his retirement from the NFL last night at Capitale, in conjuction with Gotham Magazine's 7th annual gala. Seems like he is getting out while "the getting is good" with a lucrative post-NFL career.

Important: "A Girl Like Me"

To highlight our "Children's Issue", we strongly urge new parents to watch this short film. This 8 minute documentary entitled "A Girl Like Me" recreates the “doll test” initially conducted by Dr. Kenneth Clark, which was used in the historic desegregation case, Brown vs. Board of Education. In the film, the new test yields startling results and raises the continuing issue of self-esteem in our community among our children. If accurate, we still have a long way to go.

White Atlanta suburbs push for secession

A potentially explosive dispute in the City Too Busy to Hate is taking shape over a proposal to break Fulton County in two and split off Atlanta's predominantly white, affluent suburbs to the north from some of the metropolitan area's poorest, black neighborhoods.

Legislation that would allow the suburbs to form their own county, to be called Milton County, was introduced by members of the Georgia Legislature's Republican majority earlier this month.

Supporters say it is a quest for more responsive government in a county with a population greater than that of six states. Opponents say the measure is racially motivated and will pit white against black, rich against poor.

"If it gets to the floor, there will be blood on the walls," warned state Sen. Vincent Fort, an Atlanta Democrat and member of the Legislative Black Caucus who bitterly opposes the plan. Fort added: "As much as you would like to think it's not racial, it's difficult to draw any other conclusion."

The former Milton County is now mostly white and Republican and one of the most affluent areas in the nation. Atlanta and its southern suburbs are mostly black, are controlled by Democrats and have neighborhoods with some of the highest poverty rates in America. (Buckhead, a fashionable Atlanta neighborhood of clubs, restaurants and mansions, would remain in Fulton County.)

Don Petree, the 62-year-old owner of Don's Hairstyling in Roswell, another northern Fulton suburb, said many of his customers "feel like they're not being taken care of like they should be with the tax dollars they're spending. I think there's some truth to that."

Residents of north Fulton represent 29 percent of the county's population of 915,000 but pay 42 percent of its property taxes, according to a local taxpayers group. A split would lead to the loss of $193 million in property taxes alone for Fulton County.

Critics of a split also worry about the future of Grady Memorial Hospital and the Atlanta area's MARTA commuter-rail system — both of which have contracts with the county.

The measure would require the support of two-thirds of both the House and Senate. Then it would have to put to a statewide vote. Also, residents of what would become Milton County would have to endorse the plan.

While Republicans have majorities in both chambers, they would need to win over three Democrats in the Senate and 14 in the House to get it passed.

It's just Gas and Tolls...

All we are hearing lately is that DC is "Red Hot" from our folks in the field. First, a few weeks ago, New York's mostly "still single" crowd were "road tripping" down 95 to NBA star Gilbert Arenas' 25th Birthday Party, hosted by New York mainstay Diddy himself at LOVE. We remember when the DC folks came to New York to get "love". As a matter of fact, some of them came and never left. Blame it on B-School or Law School.

Then we got a report last week that a "couples contingent" of DC ex-patriots went down to support author Michael Fauntroy's new book "Republicans and the Black Vote" at an event at the Omni Shoreham. For more on this, check out www.MichaelFauntroy.com . We plan to buy a copy.

Well, we are not saying it is a migration, however recently published statistics show DC is one of the top 5 places people are moving to (Charlotte, NC is #1) while New York is one of the top 5 places people are moving from. This years' Congressional Black Caucus should be quite a "homecomming" for folks and one of those "can't miss" years to attend, along with the Executive Leadership Conference's annual gala.

What Thomas Jefferson learned from the Muslim book of jihad

Democrat Keith Ellison is now officially the first Muslim United States congressman. True to his pledge, he placed his hand on the Quran, the Muslim book of jihad and pledged his allegiance to the United States during his ceremonial swearing-in.Capitol Hill staff said Ellison's swearing-in photo opportunity drew more media than they had ever seen in the history of the US House. Ellison represents the 5th Congressional District of Minnesota.The Quran Ellison used was no ordinary book. It once belonged to Thomas Jefferson, third president of the United States and one of America's founding fathers. Ellison borrowed it from the Rare Book Section of the Library of Congress. It was one of the 6,500 Jefferson books archived in the library.Ellison, who was born in Detroit and converted to Islam while in college, said he chose to use Jefferson's Quran because it showed that "a visionary like Jefferson" believed that wisdom could be gleaned from many sources.There is no doubt Ellison was right about Jefferson believing wisdom could be "gleaned" from the Muslim Quran. At the time Jefferson owned the book, he needed to know everything possible about Muslims because he was about to advocate war against the Islamic "Barbary" states of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Tripoli.

Ellison's use of Jefferson's Quran as a prop illuminates a subject once well-known in the history of the United States, but, which today, is mostly forgotten -- the Muslim pirate slavers who over many centuries enslaved millions of Africans and tens of thousands of Christian Europeans and Americans in the Islamic "Barbary" states.Over the course of 10 centuries, Muslim pirates cruised the African and Mediterranean coastline, pillaging villages and seizing slaves. The taking of slaves in predawn raids on unsuspecting coastal villages had a high casualty rate. It was typical of Muslim raiders to kill off as many of the "non-Muslim" older men and women as possible so the preferred "booty" of only young women and children could be collected.Young non-Muslim women were targeted because of their value as concubines in Islamic markets. Islamic law provides for the sexual interests of Muslim men by allowing them to take as many as four wives at one time and to have as many concubines as their fortunes allow. Boys as young as 9 or 10 years old, were often mutilated to create eunuchs who would bring higher prices in the slave markets of the Middle East. Muslim slave traders created "eunuch stations" along major African slave routes so the necessary surgery could be performed. It was estimated that only a small number of the boys subjected to the mutilation survived after the surgery.When American colonists rebelled against British rule in 1776, American merchant ships lost Royal Navy protection. With no American Navy for protection, American ships were attacked and their Christian crews enslaved by Muslim pirates operating under the control of the Dey of Algiers--an Islamism warlord ruling Algeria.Because American commerce in the Mediterranean was being destroyed by the pirates, the Continental Congress agreed in 1784 to negotiate treaties with the four Barbary States. Congress appointed a special commission consisting of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin, to oversee the negotiations."

Lacking the ability to protect its merchant ships in the Mediterranean, the new America government tried to appease the Muslim slavers by agreeing to pay tribute and ransoms in order to retrieve seized American ships and buy the freedom of enslaved sailors. Adams argued in favor of paying tribute as the cheapest way to get American commerce in the Mediterranean moving again. Jefferson was opposed. He believed there would be no end to the demands for tribute and wanted matters settled "through the medium of war." He proposed a league of trading nations to force an end to Muslim piracy. In 1786, Jefferson, then the American ambassador to France, and Adams, then the American ambassador to Britain, met in London with Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja, the "Dey of Algiers" ambassador to Britain.The Americans wanted to negotiate a peace treaty based on Congress' vote to appease.During the meeting Jefferson and Adams asked the Dey's ambassador why Muslims held so much hostility towards America, a nation with which they had no previous contacts.In a later meeting with the American Congress, the two future presidents reported that Ambassador Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja had answered that Islam "was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Quran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman (Muslim) who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to Paradise."For the following 15 years, the American government paid the Muslims millions of dollars for the safe passage of American ships or the return of American hostages. The payments in ransom and tribute amounted to 20 percent of United States government annual revenues in 1800. Not long after Jefferson's inauguration as president in 1801, he dispatched a group of frigates to defend American interests in the Mediterranean, and informed Congress."


Declaring that America was going to spend "millions for defense but not one cent for \ntribute," Jefferson pressed the issue by deploying American Marines and many of America's best warships to the Muslim Barbary Coast. The USS Constitution, USS Constellation, USS Philadelphia, USS Chesapeake, USS Argus, USS Syren and USS Intrepid all saw action.In 1805, American Marines marched across the dessert from Egypt into Tripolitania, forcing the surrender of Tripoli and the freeing of all American slaves.During the Jefferson administration, the Muslim Barbary States, crumbling as a result of intense American naval bombardment and on shore raids by Marines, finally officially agreed to abandon slavery and piracy.Jefferson's victory over the Muslims lives on today in the Marine Hymn, with the line, "From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli, we will fight our country's battles on the land as on the sea."It wasn't until 1815 that the problem was fully settled by the total defeat of all the Muslim slave trading pirates. Jefferson had been right. The "medium of war" was the only way to put and end to the Muslim problem. Mr. Ellison was right about Jefferson. He was a "visionary" wise enough to read and learn about the enemy from their own Muslim book of jihad.

Why "The Pursuit of Happyness" is the must see film of the season...

A lot fo folks will disagree with this and that's fine. I have heard people say that Sony Pictures "Dreamgirls" starring Jamie Foxx is the "must see" film this year/last year. Well, all I can say is the Columbia Pictures' biopic of Christopher Gardner, a real life Wall Street success who started his career as a homeless man caring for his 8 year old, touched the First Ledger staff on a very personal level. It also reminded some of us that life is not always about about Land Rovers, big screen TVs and big remodeled houses. Life is about much more and the line between being a "baller" and being broke is very thin indeed. Especially for our people, or there would be more "ballers" out there. Will Smith and his son Jayden Smith give extraordinary performances and every award nomination they recieve this season is well deserved.

2007, is a wonderful photographic proclamation of the excellence and
struggles of black men from all walks of life who give exhaustive efforts
to create broader possibilities for their children and families. This is
important imagery (for obvious reasons).

Recently, I was surprised to learn that my daughter, Kira Iman, and I were
selected to be featured on the book's cover! For me, it is an amazing way
to further celebrate the joy of my first born ... and gives my wife, Lela,
and me great anticipation for all that's yet to come upon the arrival of
our second daughter expected in late-February 2007 (God Willing).

I was pleased to have been asked to be apart of this project and wanted to
share the fruits of Carol's great labor with you and your family. Please

Our ubiquitous clandestine informants told us yesterday that Congressman Charles Rangel, Chairman of the Ways and Means committee and Grammy winner Kanye West will be honorees at the 100 Black Men Gala this 27th Annual Benefit Gala of 100 Black Men, which will be held during Black History Month, on Thursday, February 22, 2007.

Other honorees this year include Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts, Football star Curtis Martin, Gospel Singer Kirk Franklin, Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Ian Moore, with Host Emcees, Lori Stokes of ABC-TV and Maurice Dubois of CBS-TV.

The greatness in all men is eventually recognized...

As America mourns the death of President Gerald R. Ford (1913-2006), many have come to realize his highly significant role in history. In 1974, President Ford was a much maligned leader for many of his decisions including the full pardon of President Richard M. Nixon. This is in stark contrast to what we know now about the results of Ford's choices and their positive effect on the future. Among other things, we can thank him for ATM Machines and Adjustable Rate Mortgages. The decisions President Ford made were the right ones for those of us in the present who now benefit from his tough choices.

Music's Living Legend James Brown died of heart failure on Christmas Day. Best known to his fans as "The Godfather of Soul", James Brown was one of the greatest pioneers of contemporary music, influencing rhythm & blues, jazz, soul, gospel, and hip-hop. Without question, he will be missed all over the world.


The horse drawn carriage carrying James Brown's body was ushered down 125th Street and taken to the landmark Apollo Theater.


Thousands of fans and onlookers flooded the streets of Harlem to catch a glimpse of music legend James Brown one last time.

Uptown got more than it's usual share of celebrity visits this week for the holidays. Tennis sensation James Blake headlined the All-Star event "Serving Up the Holidays'" yesterday at the Harlem Armory. This annual fundraiser benefits the Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program and was promoted by (our friend) nightlife impresario turned PR Guru Pamela Pickins. We heard that those who came out got a great first hand lesson from the greatest that tennis has to offer. Parents and kids were not disappointed. Neither were James Blake's female fans.

In the spirit of the holiday season, we (the citizens of New York) are asking for New York's most celebrated real estate developer Donald Trump and ABC's "The View" co-host and gay rights champion Rosie O'Donnell to set aside their hostilities until after the New Year. After reviewing excerpts of their recent remarks in the media regarding Mr. Trump's decision not to "fire" Miss USA Tara Conner, First Ledger has decided that these two media mavericks need a serious time out, before someone gets hurt or sued for slander.

Granted, Mr. Trump called Rosie a "Big Fat Slob", but Rosie started it. If anyone talked about someone's late father, the way Rosie did (in reference to Trump inheriting his fortune...a sharp contrast to his self made image) , the gloves would be off. We know that "The View" needs ratings but come on, her rant yesterday morning was downright mean spirited.

A Piece Of Our Childhood Will Be Greatly Missed...

Animation Pioneer Joseph Barbera, co-creator of “The Flintstones” and “Tom & Jerry” among many others, died in his home in California on December 18 at age 95 years.

Along with his partner, the late William Hanna, Joseph Barbara won seven Academy Awards for Best (Cartoon) Short Subject including the first “Tom & Jerry” film. According to Wireimage, "Hanna-Barbera Productions was created in 1957 after the disintegration of MGM’s animation division, and quickly became the most successful television animation studio in Hollywood. Under the pair’s substantial artistic leadership, the company produced classics like “The Flintstones”, “The Jetsons”, “Jonny Quest”, and “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?”."

Mr. Hanna and Mr. Barbara provided entertainment for children and adults for generations, including this publisher. We are always saddened when a part of our childhood is lost. Their work will live on and continue to entertain for generations to come.

"Your Blues Ain't Like Mine" today...

The publisher and staff of First Ledger - Northeast Edition offers our condolences to the family of Bebe Moore Campbell. According to the African American Literature Book Club website http://aalbc.com/authors/bebe.htm , Ms. Campbell passed on Nov 27th at the age of 56. She was a great author and she will be missed. She is survived by her husband and two children, Ellis Gordon Jr., actress Maia Campbell and Ellis Gordon III and a host of family, relatives and friends.

Bebe Moore Campbell was the author of "BROTHERS AND SISTERS", a New York Times bestseller, among other novels. She won an NAACP Image Award for literature. She was a commentator for National Public Radio and a contributing editor for Essence magazine and numerous other national publications.

The First Resume...

The debate continues as to whether OUR complete history should be taught and reinforced to our youth. Although there are many aspects of our shared culture that are embraced and celebrated, many think the less attractive aspects of our history in this country should be downplayed. Many other cultures around the world (European, Asian and Latino) view their legacy of overcoming adversity as a "Badge of Honor", while many here in America ask themselves from time to time, "Why would I want to remember that...?"

We welcome this debate and lest we forget where we came from the next time we go shopping for a Land Rover or a 75" Plasma Screen HD-TV, this was sent by our "good friend" in North Carolina and billed in his e-mail as "The Black Mans' First Resume". For those of you who say this is a little heavy for early in the week, we agree...but sometimes "heavy" is what is required to effect change.

What is better than being a movie star? Having your wife and kid as movie stars too? They were joined by several celebrities including Will's wife Jada, the film's breakout star, Jayden Smith and actress Thandie Newton at a special screening of the film on December 2nd at the Beekman Theater, followed by an after event at the Four Seasons. Contrary to the media's reports that Garner is still cool to the idea of Will Smith portraying him on film, the two seemed to have worked it out, by eyewitness accounts. Maybe Dave Chappelle just was not available to play Chris Gardner and he needed time to get over it.

Yesterday the 20th Annual Miracle on Madison Avenue a program to benefit the Children's Aid Society, was held in Manhattan on 57th Street and (where else) Madison Ave. According to their website, "Miracle on Madison Avenue (Miracle) is one of the largest and most high profile events of the holiday season in New York City... Miracle is an annual event in which New Yorkers open their hearts to support the most under-served children of the city."

While "Gang Green" (aka the NY Jets) defies the odds and heads toward the playoffs, the NY Giants dropped the ball (no punt intended) this Sunday and lost to the Dallas Cowboys (23 - 20). This was THE game to watch this Sunday and lots of folks in the tri-state area are "crushed".

A blog by any other name...

I have worked with a number of start-up companies over the last few years and the biggest challenge was not in getting financing, developing a strategy, accomidating growth or executing the business plan. The GREATEST challenge was always the name. Sooner or later, any name that was developed would turn out to be used by someone else. Usually somthing totally unrealated on the other side of the country. Sometimes the name would be a business right around the corner.

Thanks to our friend Robert Smith for pointing out that the "Northeast Star-Ledger" bears a remarkable similarity to another very local publication. We apologize for any confusion.

Success means rolling with the punches, so I have developed the new name "First Ledger". This will be the Northeast edition of First Ledger and over time, we will develop editions for our friends "down South" and "out West".

Someone once asked me why so many online companies have non-traditional names like "Google", "Slate" , "Yahoo" and "Napster". I did not have an answer then...I know the answer now. Thank you for your continued support.

Is it bigger than the story itself...?

City Hall in Manhattan was in a complete frenzy as reporters and photographers tried to get pictures of Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Reverend Al Sharpton together at a press conference held yesterday, following closed door meeting between the Mayor and various Black community leaders. The meetings and press conference were held to discuss community reaction to a police shooting on Sunday in Queens, NY. Rev. Sharpton's presence in City Hall during this incident is regarding by the media and observers as a redical departure from the previous administration.

Queens resident Sean Bell and two other men were exiting a bachelor party at 3:00am on Sunday, when they were approached by undercover NYPD officers, who believed one of the young men had a weapon. The vehicle carrying Bell and his companions hit an unmarked police vehicle. 5 NYPD officers then fired 50 shots at the three unarmed men, resulting in Bell's death. None of the three men were carrying a weapon and the following day would have been Mr. Bell's wedding day.

"Even Gigantor could not help..."

"Damn...somebody call Gigantor" was a quote made by a fan at a New Rochelle gathering, during the NY Giants unbelievable defeat by the Tennessee Titans on Sunday 24 to 21. For those who were not born and raised in New York, "Gigantor" refers to the popular Japanese cartoon of the late 60's, early 70's shown in the Tri-State area when televisions had "dials".

Gigantor was 100 feet tall and pretty much indestructible, unlike Sunday's NY Giants. After watching the Giants' game and the highlight reels on ESPN (over and over again), we believe even "Gigantor" could not have stopped this loss. Maybe "Gigantor" could teach Eli Manning how to NOT throw an interception. For fans of "Gang Green", the NY Jets defeated the poorly branded Houston Texans (we guess Oilers is not available) on Sunday in East Rutherford, NJ, 26 to 11.

A Slow Week...Publishers Commentary

Dear Readers,

Probably for the better, last week was a slow week for our news. People were allowed to enjoy their family gatherings and choose to discuss, around the dinner table, the sillier of the two top stories last week, OJ Simpson or Michael Richards (Seinfeld's Kramer). More than likely, we talked about ourselves. There was a feeling at gatherings around the tri-state area that things could be changing for the better. Other folks said it's just the calm before the storm. The word for today in Washington is "change". This publication sees the glass as being half full, not half empty.

We hope everyone had a great holiday and we offer our prayers to the men and women who are serving overseas in the armed forces and their families.

The New York Jets delivered turkeys and food yesterday to the Neighbors Together Soup Kitchen at 2094 Fulton Street in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, New York. This is part of Food Bank For New York City's "Thanksgiving For Five" program. These guys have the right idea about giving THANKS.
